Frequality Asked Questions

  • I have been separated from my spouse for 3 years (5 years with children), can I get a divorce or annulment?
The simple answer is no. These periods were mentioned in law bill to the Civil Courts in Egypt to enable the courts grant Civil Divorce to separated couples. However, the Church follow the teachings of the Holy Bible and separation is not one of the reasons to grant a Permit to Remarry (refer to "Teachings" page on this website).
  • I have been invited for an interview, can I bring someone with me to the interview for support?
No, interviews are very personal. We deal with everything said in the interview as we treat confessions, in strict confidence. Only the person invited can attend the interview.
  • Will there be a confrontation with my spouse at the council interview?
No, interviews are conducted with one person at a time and in different days to avoid any confrontation. Please let the council know if there are any Intervention Orders.
  • The letter I received states that my Permit to Remarry will expire after 1 year, do I have to marry within that time frame?
No, the council decision has no expiry date but the Permit to Remarry is valid for 1 year. In case the permit will be used for marriage after 2 or 3 years of the decision, please apply to renew the permit through the form on this website.
  • I had a previous case with the council, how many times can I apply to the council?
The Church can only grant two Permits to Remarry to an individual. If the third marriage fails, the Church advise the person to look after their spiritual life and salvation and not seek to remarry.
  • How can I appeal the decision of the Diocesan Clerical Council for Marital Affairs?
